A genus of some 200 species of shrubs and small trees, natives of Central and S. America. Leaves alternate, entire. Flowers in cymes; corolla funnelor pitcher-shaped, five-lobed at the mouth; fruit a berry. The species here described flower and winter well on walls in the milder parts; the hardiest, but least attractive, is C. parqui. All are easily increased by cuttings of half-ripened wood. A monograph of the genus by Pièrre Francey appeared in Candollea, Vol. 6, pp. 46-398 (1935) and Vol. 7, pp. 1-132 (1936).
