Danaƫ

Family

Liliaceae

A genus of one species, closely allied to Ruscus. It is, however, quite distinct in its terminal inflorescence, bisexual flowers, and unarmed ‘leaves’. The so-called ‘leaves’, as in Ruscus, are really flattened branches (phylloclades), but perfectly resemble leaves and serve the same functions. The flowers have a small whitish perianth (receptacle) with six short lobes; there is a fleshy rim below the lobes, and below this the stamens arise, their filaments united to form a tube; the ovary is rounded, the style short and slender, with a capitate stigma; the fruit is a fleshy berry.
