Family

Sterculiaceae

A genus of a few species of trees and shrubs, mainly confined to S. Asia, but also represented in Africa. Leaves large, palmately veined and usually lobed. Flowers apetalous, in panicles or sometimes racemes. Stamens and ovary borne on a short gynandrophore. Filaments of stamens united into a tube. Ovary single-styled, with five carpels each opening and becoming leaflike soon after flowering; seeds about the size of a pea around the edges near the base. The generic name honours an Austrian governor of Lombardy in the 18th century, K. J. von Firmian.
