Globulariaceae

A genus of about twenty-eight species, natives of the Canary and Cape Verde Islands, southern and central Europe, and Asia Minor. Flowers bisexual, united into a globular head, surrounded at the base by a many-bracted involucre. Calyx five-lobed. Corolla two-lipped, the upper lip short, two-lobed, the lower three-lobed. Stamens four, inserted on the corolla-tube. Ovary superior, with a single style. Fruit a one-seeded nutĀ­let, surrounded by the persistent calyx. The only other genus in the family is confined to Somaliland and Socotra.
