The flowers of Kolkwitzia resemble those of the closely allied Abelia but are borne in pairs and the fruits are very distinct, being bristly and prolonged at the apex into a narrow beak, so that the persistent sepals, which are also bristly, appear to be borne on a stalk. The sepals do not, however, enlarge in fruit as they do in Abelia. The genus contains the single species described below and is named in honour of Richard Kolkwitz, a German professor of botany.
