A genus of a single species allied to the honeysuckles, named by Gronovius after the great Linnaeus. In his Critica Botanica (1737), pp. 80-81, Linnaeus himself commented: ‘Linnaea is a plant of Lapland, lowly, insignificant, disregarded, flowering but for a brief space – from Linnaeus, who resembles it’ (Sir Arthur Hort’s translation, p. 64, 1938).

The well-known colony of L. borealis in the Sunningdale Nurseries, mentioned in the first impression of Volume II, is gone. A load of manure was dumped on it. The plant has become an endangered species in Scotland, owing to the felling of its forest habitats (Bull. Alp. Gard. Soc., Vol. 38, pp. 240-43 (1970)).
