A genus of about fifteen species of evergreen shrubs, natives of E. Asia, belonging to the same group of the Rose family as the apples, pears, hawthorns, and quinces, etc. Leaves stout and leathery, alternate, shortly stalked. Flowers in terminal racemes or panicles; petals five; stamens fifteen to twenty; ovary two-celled. The following kinds succeed in a good, well-drained soil.
