Symphoricarpos: Doorenbos Hybrids

Modern name

Symphoricarpos Doorenbos Hybrids

These hybrids, which are likely to displace the older sorts in gardens, were raised in Holland by G. A. Doorenbos, who made a mixed planting of S. albus var. laevigatus, S. orbiculatus and S. × chenaultii, and selected the best of the seedlings raised from it by open pollination. The first of these hybrids was named in 1940, but British gardeners did not make their acquaintance until 1955, when Mr Doorenbos sent fruiting sprays by air to the R.H.S. Show of October 4-5. The most admired of these hybrids is ‘Mother of Pearl’ (S. × doorenbosii Krüssmann) which is a vigorous, semi-pendulous shrub to 5 or 6 ft high with broad-elliptic or obovate leaves and dense clusters of berries up to 12 in. wide, white with a pink cheek. This is considered by Dr Krüssmann to be a hybrid between S. albus var. laevigatas and S. × chenaultii. It makes a good hedging plant and received an Award of Merit when exhibited by Messrs Notcutt in 1971. Also a good hedger, but needing closer planting, is ‘White Hedge’, which is of stiffly erect habit to about 5 ft high and bears large white berries in upright mostly terminal clusters well above the foliage. Although near to the common snowberry it does not sucker. In ‘Erect’, of similar habit, the fruits are purplish pink. ‘Magic Berry’ has rosy lilac berries, colouring earlier, and is of low, bushy habit.
