Bignonia

Family

Bignoniaceae

As understood by Bentham and Hooker, Bignonia was a large genus of about 150 species; indeed, some of the early botanists included in it such bignoniaceous trees as Catalpa and Vaulownia. In the drastic splitting of Bignonia carried out by Miers a century or so ago, even B. capreolata, described here, was transferred to Doxantha. However, it is now considered that this species should be regarded as the type species of the Linnaean genus Bignonia and is the only species now recognised in that genus. It climbs by tendrils, a characteristic that easily distinguishes it from the allied Campsis.
