A monotypic genus, named in honour of Robert Fortune, the famous plant collector. From other hardy genera of the Hamamelidaceae it is distinguished by the following combination of characters: leaves deciduous, pinnately-veined; petals very short and narrow but longer than the sepals; fruit a two-valved, two-seeded capsule. The allied Sinowilsonia, another monotypic genus from China, is distinguished from Fortunearia by its apetalous flowers.
