A genus of no garden merit with about thirty-five species in Asia (as far west as Asia Minor), N.E. Africa, and America, allied to Rhamnus. The generic name commemorates Auguste Sageret, a French botanist (1763-1851). The type of the genus, S. theezans (L.) Brogn., was described by Linnaeus in 1771 from a specimen collected in China by his pupil Osbeck. The odd specific epithet refers to the fact that the leaves of this species were used as a surrogate for tea.
