A genus of a single species, belonging to the same group of the Ericaceae as Cladothamnus, Elliottia and Botryostege. The leading characters are the thin deciduous leaves; inflorescence terminal on the season’s growths, paniculate; flowers with three free petals; anthers opening by slits. The present species, and Botryostege bracteata (originally described in Tripetaleia), were transferred to Elliottia by Bentham and Hooker in Genera Plantarum (1876). This judgement is upheld by Bruce A. Bohm et al. in ‘Generic Limits in the Tribe Cladothamnae …’, Journ. Arn. Arb., Vol. 59 (1978), pp. 311-41. In this paper Cladothamnus is also transferred to Elliottia, its one species becoming E. pyroliflora (Bong.) Brim & P. F. Stevens.
