A monotypic genus allied to Ledum, Tripetaleia, and Botryostege, but distinguished by the combination of deciduous leaves, inflorescence of one to three flowers with ten stamens, conspicuous leafy bracts, five free linear-oblong sepals and a five-celled ovary.

This genus has been transferred to Elliottia, in which the species described (the only member of Cladothamnus) takes the name E. pyroliflora (Bong.) Brim & P.F. Stevens (see Journ. Arn. Arb., Vol. 59 (1978), pp. 311-41).
